This episode covers our round on the West Course at Wentworth Golf Club, home of the BMW PGA Championship: the sub-air greens system, the “another planet” clubhouse, standing on the actual championship tee with the grandstands up, and the honest debate about whether Wentworth’s reputation is built on fame or genuinely deserved.

good story is about the journey, and this is the story of our journey trying to play the top 100 courses in the UK and Ireland in just 10 years. This is the Top 100 in 10 Golf Podcast, episode 86, the Wentworth Golf Club Review. Now, in golf, the practice of using positive thinking, visualisation, and focused attention to turn your personal goals and desires into reality is very common. But it turns out you can also use it to get on golf courses that you didn’t think were previously possible to get on. Do you remember, Jim, that I manifested Wentworth playing on Wentworth into being just not with the same person, but there you go.
Jim
Absolutely, thanks Nick.
Nish
Yeah. I didn’t even bump into him then. So such a letdown, such a tease, Nick. Well, look, this is the story of our day at Wentworth Golf Club and our thoughts about Wentworth Golf Club. Big shock. It was fucking amazing. Please excuse my swearing at the start of the episode. But before we get into any of that, please hit follow on this podcast episode after you’ve had listened to this. Today’s a great episode. It’s made possible because of the contacts we’re getting. We’ve not even done it yet.
Chris
How do you know it’s great?
Nish
I’ve got all the plan here, okay, and I know that this is better than all the other dross that we’ve produced.
Chris
So I think me and Jim should do our best to make it a really shit episode now. We don’t need to try.
Nish
Well, look, it takes two seconds for you to do so, but it really, really helps us. So let’s get back to talking about Wentworth Golf Club, specifically, Pacifically, the West course. Yeah. A course that is famous. Yeah. A course that I think everybody who’s remotely into golf probably knows better than any other golf course because it’s on the teddy every single year. Or it used to be when we were kids, it was on the BBC. Always remember it, yeah. And there are certain things and places that just capture your imagination, aren’t there? Yeah. And we said it while we were driving down, we kept just going, like, we’re going to fucking Wentworth.
Jim
You can imagine. I was so glad I wasn’t in the car.
Nish
Oh my god.
Chris
Oh my god. We were like two teenage schoolgirls. It was ridiculous.
Nish
Yeah, you
Nish
could have like plaited our hair, it could have done all sorts of things. Like we we were just like, this is the reason that because it’s you need to be invited. The only way you can get on is a member who invites you, right? Or like there’s a corporate day or whatever, but like corporate day for me, this is my corporate, whatever. But it’s like you it’s it’s out of reach, it’s out of even though you knew lots of people have played it and you’ve seen it on telly, it’s just like yeah, yeah, I can go and just pay 500 quid and play Carnoustie, I can whatever. Yeah, and it’s that has a hold on you. Oh, definitely. It really does. Yeah, yeah.
Chris
And we were just like, oh and it definitely felt like the most special place we’ve been so far, and it like you say, just because like you know, we’ve been to Carnoustie and things like that, but like you say, it’s just not quite that level of exclusive exclusivity.
Nish
The the giddiness levels were the highest we’ve ever had, definitely. Yeah, yeah, I think so.
Chris
And we had a three and a half hour drive, yeah, yeah, which was yeah, 100% giddy all the way down.
Jim
Um it was I mean, I just remember when you you you were on your way back from Portugal, were you? And and you you said you might have an opportunity to get on the next day or something.
Nish
Yeah, it was I was away, and it’s definitely all being organised while I was away on holiday, and I I bored my wife with it. And I was like, and she was like, Yeah, yeah, whatever.
Jim
Well, if it wasn’t if it wasn’t that’d be something else.
Nish
Yeah, but you do not understand how big a deal this is, like you really don’t understand how she was like, Oh, well, why why what is it? It’s like like it’s so exclusive like you can’t went with like I do not know about Wentworth, but it was just like just it just has everything. So, like if you’re playing Wentworth and you get like the invitation, I bet everybody feels exactly like this, and I can’t describe the feeling that you have. Yeah, yeah. But
Nish
like you’re pulling up, you get you know, you’re like I was like, Ah, Chris, right? We know it’s we’re pulling up Wentworth Drive or whatever it’s called, and it’s like, oh, I mean it’s basically like fucking Disneyland for an eight-year-old, isn’t it?
Chris
It’s it’s the same feeling, I imagine.
Nish
It’s so good, yeah. And then we’re so we’re so we we were invited on um by a member, and he was the most amazing host. He was so good, he told us so much about the course. Plus guys, he was a great guide around the course, and he was like, you know, we had breakfast at the start, the breakfast was unreal.
Chris
Yeah, we had a bite to eat afterwards. Like before we start talking about it, like the actual course and stuff, but the arrival at Wentworth. Oh blood. I mean, you know Wentworth’s fancy, right? And everyone knows that. But like you kind of get there and you’re in the kind of beautiful, uh, you know, kind of surrey kind of forests, I guess, that you’re driving through, and then you kind of get to the drive, and there’s like castle kind of type walls with like Wentworth.
Nish
Iconic clubhouse, right?
Chris
Yeah, yeah, but then you kind of drive it up, and it’s just like fucking mansions everywhere, and then you kind of get around the corner and you’re like, There it is, the first tea. Yeah, you drive past the never realise that you drive past the first tea, don’t you drive under it, and up to the incredible clubhouse, which is again.
Nish
We were talking about it in the car.
Chris
Yeah, yeah.
Nish
That first tee is iconic. It’s the most televised first.
Chris
I was thinking we said it in the previous televised first hole of any golf course.
Nish
Yeah, like you just everyone knows it, and that backdrop. And and we we look, we we were also very lucky. The invitation was amazing anyway, but we were very lucky that we we’re short of it just at the minute, but in a couple of weeks from now, they’re gonna be playing the BMW PGA championship. Yeah, right. Must be next week, and that’s it. Yeah, I think so. Is it next week? I’m not sure. Solange cup, isn’t it? Next week we can come, but anyway, whatever. It’s very, very soon from now. Yeah. So the infrastructure was going up. There were like stands and things up. The first tee was ready. Yeah, yeah. They had all the signage up.
Chris
Yeah, so we got to stand on the first tee with like the DP World Tour signs behind us and the big let first hole.
Nish
And like we sort of got there, and we were like, oh, we’ll stand on our we were playing off whatever it was, the whites or whatever, and we were because we can’t play off the championship tees currently. Um, and we were just like had a little picture, and then our host just said, Oh no, boys, what are you doing? Get up to the to the team, like, oh can we? You know, I’m I I I’m not shy about this sort of stuff normally, but I was just like, oh my god, like, yeah, yeah, please, can we? Like, you know, yeah, yeah. It was just like say Disneyland for for golfers, yeah, and having that that thing the clubhouse.
Chris
Is that the best clubhouse ever? I mean, it’s just like another planet, isn’t it? That’s just that everything’s brilliant, it’s absolutely brilliant.
Nish
Super relaxed, like nobody’s like snooty, nobody’s like whatever. The service is like unreal out of this world. It’s plush, it’s the plushest thing we’ve ever been in, and it’s all like that, you know, it’s like modern but classical looking furniture and all that kind of stuff. Yeah, the memorabilia is out of this world, yeah.
Chris
There’s like a golf club of like every like major kind of player that’s been there and won there. So you’re like going down, the names on the wall are just absolutely incredible less of golfers, right?
Nish
Well, um, I did we did the preview on the way down, we didn’t, and I remember I described that they were like glass prism sticking out with the drivers. I felt like I described that quite well because he got there and he were like, Oh my god, yeah, that’s exactly what it is. And you know, you go in and like the staff are all impeccably well dressed, and then you go into the locker room. It’s the locker room you imagine, Jim, you would be playing in out of everywhere you went as a pro. Like it was just beautiful inside, wasn’t it? Really well appointed, like dead modern, like the showers were unreal. It was just like everything was just amazing in that place. You walk up there, it was almost Glenn Eagleish sort of vibes. I mean, you walk up these posh stairs, but just playing it was on steroids, like it was yeah, oh my god, what a what a clubhouse that is. Um, and we did the whole like you know, dropped our clubs off and all this kind of thing. Um now I’ll forget about this later because I’m still excited about this day now, and I’ll forget about this fact, but we’ll we’ll fast forward, we’ve just played our round, it was a baking hot day again. Yeah, we’ve just played our round and we get back to the clubhouse, and we’re gonna go in and we’re gonna have a drink and a bite to eat. What is the one thing you’d want to be presented to you as you walk off a golf course and you’re hot and you’re bothered and you’re getting ready to go and have a drink? An iced towel gym. Because that is what we got when we got to the door of the clubhouse. I was like, Yes, please. Can we drink the water? You know, whatever. It was and they went, so we opened the thing up. I was like, we each to go and get. I don’t know, sir. I’ll get it for you. Yeah, yeah. There you go. Little touch, right? That’s not really cost him anything, it’s just a bit of a bit of ice and just some towel. Well, it did when you rubbed the towel, but you know, yeah, yeah, yeah. How great was that?
Chris
I was yeah, the whole the whole experience was just like another level, wasn’t it? It was it was just perfect. It was it was perfect.
Nish
I’m gonna put it out there. I’ve got a big problem though. I don’t think I can go back to playing normal golf course anymore now. Right. I feel like this is this is me now. I’m accustomed to You’re a Wentworth guy. My Wentworth, yeah. I mean, I you could tell that though, couldn’t you? My Wentworth kind of guy. Wentworth suits me well. Just so I like, oh it was so good. That it puts you in such a good frame of mind for your round of golf. Yeah, everything was just perfect.
Jim
What’s that, sorry? I’d be too excited. That’s it, you wouldn’t play with golf. I’d be I wouldn’t be able to calm myself down.
Nish
Because we’d had the time to have breakfast and stuff like that, we’d given ourselves a bit of chilling out time and like you know, it was like so called the atmosphere in and yeah, and then obviously um it’s the so Wentworth is also home, the headquarters of the DP World Tour. So if you go if you get into Wentworth, uh it’s worth it just having so as you come out of the clubhouse, do a left where towards where the range is. Yeah and the range is not grass range, it’s uh it’s bays and things like that.
Chris
There is another there is another grass range. Is that grass? Is that yeah, no, I think there is another grass range.
Nish
No pyramid of golf balls, though. I have to say, that hasn’t come up yet. Boom. Um I was expecting it went worth actually, if I’m perfectly honest with you. However, but uh there’s a road that then goes up to the car park, you’ll see, and if you go in the normal car park, you’ll you’ll you’ll find that anyway. But there is the DP World Tour building is actually there, and it’s all signposted and stuff like that. So it’s pretty cool article.
Chris
It’s also the first clubhouse that we’ve seen that’s got a ballroom. So if you kind of walk down the side, there’s like a sign for the ballroom.
Nish
That’s class. Okay, and obviously the shape of it is just absolutely iconic, and then we hit it on a gorgeous day, like not a cloud in the sky, just like perfect temperatures, like mid-20s, not no breeze, yeah, just colours popped, all that kind of stuff.
Chris
Yeah, yeah. Um, but I think it’s worth noting, like talking about colours popping, because like I mean, we played Walton Heath a few weeks before, and you know, we’d played a bit of golf because kind of in between that, and every other golf course that you’re playing is like I mean, brown, brown as brown. There’s there is literally no grass anywhere, everything is just dead. Like the green keepers are just trying their absolute hardest to keep the greens alive, and you get to Wentworth and you’re like, fucking hell, it’s like just lush green everywhere, it’s like being in a fucking rainforest or something. So they they were they were exempt from the host pipe band.
Nish
No, no, no, no, no, no, Jim. Let’s not be unfair to them. I spoke to the assistant professional, had a good chat with him afterwards. Really good guy, Callum. Yeah, yeah. Nice guy. Um, he said there’s a real microclimate around Wentworth. So what’s been happening is every night it’s weird, it just rains, so it’s kept it lush, but only on the fairways, not on the rough. Like it’s amazing. Like that’s that that’s the aura of that place, Jim. It’s the aura of the place. Except from the host bike bump. Um it was so amazing that I was doing videos, I was like, brown, green, brown, green. I was like, where else in the country is anybody playing on a lush green firewave?
Chris
Yeah, and it was like soft underfoot as well, as you get on the greens and you’re like, oh my god, this is a common place.
Nish
Exactly, yeah. It was like middle of the heat wave. Now, one little fact, it’s ranked 48, okay, in in our list, right? It’s it’s dropped further since, and that’s 48 on our list, it’s dropped since, and we’ll we’ll we’ll definitely get into that. Um, ridiculous, yeah. Right, handicap. So I’m 16.3 at time of playing this. My handicap jumped up two, course adjusted, 25. That’s the biggest jump we’ve had so far. That’s a nine street. I’ve played off the wires. That’s a nine-stroke bump up of your handicap. Yeah, I haven’t the most we’ve had is six, I think seven maybe. Nine is huge, so hard course on paper, but we both played it really well.
Chris
We both played it. I think we’ve both gone in there and like, you know, and we’ve done the preview, and like everything you read is like Wentmouth’s great, it’s fucking hard. And we like we our host, we played with him before at Swinley, and he’s like, he’s like, Wentmouth’s just like a different lead to Swinley. He’s like, it’s just it’s just so much longer and so much harder. Like, you’ve got to be able to hit it a long way. And then we’ve played off the whites. Um we were kind of like, I think we were lining ourselves like a little bit nervous, weren’t we? We were like, oh, this is gonna be like a really tough day. Actually, I mean, I’m not gonna say it’s easy because that would be No, no, it’s doing it disservice. That would be a total disservice, but it was eminently more playable than I thought it was gonna be. Correct.
Nish
Yeah, I thought it was gonna be like, where do I where do I go?
Chris
Yeah, like it’s just like so long time to drive a three-wood into all the par fours and stuff. Like, I might you know you play it off the back tees, it probably is like that. But yeah, um, you know, we were playing off the white tees, it’s only one one away from the back tees. Yeah, yeah.
Nish
It was unbelievable, mate. So so yeah, so that was the bump. It’s a par 73, that’s the other one. I don’t think we’ve played a par 73 yet. Or was Trump? I’m not sure. I think so. So it’s this is full-on championship golf. Like um now, the other thing about Wentworth is it has something called a sub-air system under the greens. Now, for the golf nerds out there, a sub-air system is something that regulates the humidity levels and the moisture levels in the green and adjusts that to keep them basically playable all year round in all conditions, right? Let’s talk about those greens, Chris. I’ve not played on anything like that anywhere ever. And I know we’ve probably said a few times, best greens ever, whatever, and all that sort of stuff. Those greens, so I’ll give you an example here, Jim. So you you might if you watch any kind of professional golf, you might have seen like they’re always like patting stuff down, and and you know, the Keegan Bradley cheats because he does it on his line and he tramples it down to to it’s called uh trenching. He does that death 100%. But anyway, they’re always like patting stuff down. I would love to have Pete on the podcast.
Jim
I’m onto him.
Nish
But those greens are the only greens I’ve ever played on where the studs in my shoes were leaving impressions on the golf and they were they were roughing it up a little bit, right? So if you walked on your line or you walked past your line or over something, it normally when we do that, like it makes no you can’t see anything, yeah. You could visually see it like yeah, it was proper like snooker table, wasn’t it? It was unbelievable, and again at that time of year in the middle of this heat wave, yeah, yeah, you were firing it into a green, and it’s like pitch mark, drop and stop. I was like, where is that happening anywhere else in the country? Yeah, added to the whole like we’re lucky boys, we are we were so lucky doing that. They were unbelievable, those greens, and that’s obviously what they play on in America and and whatever, and you can now see why, yeah.
Chris
If you had the whatever it is, yeah, subair to whatever you need to get to to implement it, you would.
Nish
Yeah, it was it just yeah, carpets, mate. It was it was so those greens were so good, yeah. So so so good. Um, and obviously we had the grandstands up, so that was special. Uh, what was the phrase you used, Chris, on hole three? I’m just gonna aim for the TV tower. TV tower, yeah.
Chris
How many times do you get to say that? I was like, for the first and the last time in my life, I’m just gonna say this. I’m just gonna aim at the TV tower.
Nish
What’s that’s like what is this place?
Chris
I mean, the stands were empty, I take it.
Nish
Oh no, no, no. Our millions of fans were there in spirit.
Chris
All of the all of the top 110 podcast fans were out in in in uh yeah, yeah. So they’re empty, yeah. Oh well.
Jim
Uh you can but dream one day, one day, you never know.
Nish
Um, generally, as well, my my one other observation about the course as well was that I thought there was more undulation on that course than I expected. It looks much flatter on TV. Yeah, I know that’s an obvious thing because everyone says about Augusta as well, don’t they? It’s like you get there and it’s like, oh my god, these hills are massive. But I thought it was just generally quite flat and it was the trees that added stuff. No, yeah.
Chris
I mean, once you play the first two holes, you realise that’s definitely not the case.
Nish
Yeah, absolutely. There were like some holes that were like gave me swindly forest vibes. There was something in the hind head vibes where it was like a bit of a like a valley that you teed off into. Yeah, but the par threes were all either uphill, downhill, whatever, there’s hardly anything flat there.
Chris
No, there isn’t.
Nish
It was yeah, like it there was a lot for you to take in when you were going around that golf course. Yeah. Um do you have any general opinions about the course as such, Chris, before we get into the nitty-gritty of it all?
Chris
I
Chris
guess I guess we’ve kind of both went in there. Again, you kind of mentioned it earlier about the um the rankings and it falling in the rankings to some issues like the 70s. So we I think we’re both kind of going in there going, oh maybe it’s you know it’s Wentworth and it’s everyone thinks it’s class because it’s Wentworth and they play the PGA tour there and all that kind of stuff. But like I I think it’s such a such a disservice to that golf course. Like it was fucking brilliant from start to finish. It was I mean, it’s definitely one of the best courses that we played, right? I think we both came away with a similar sort of feeling. It was just class from start to finish. Didn’t disappoint. Didn’t disappoint, no. And I think it’s a real rough ride, doesn’t it, Wentworth? I think from a lot of people when you when you read about it.
Nish
Yeah, and we we cover this in the preview, didn’t we? We recorded this on the way down, and we were like, you know, is this a little bit of like I don’t know, I don’t want to say I like Wentworth because that makes me sound like I’m uh you know, I’m I’m keen on the experience rather than the golf course. Yeah, it makes me sound like I’m not worthy of judging golf courses. Yeah, I just don’t know how you can score that down much.
Chris
I think people who get a bit too kind of punsy about the whole golf architecture seem to seem to be down on it, but I mean from from where I always stood, it’s a pretty incredible golf course.
Nish
Yep, from my eyes, I was like, okay. No spoilers, but you know, we loved it. Um right, well, let’s do it.
Nish
Let’s go with our top three holes, Chris.
Chris
Okay.
Nish
Um what would you like to go first? Do you want me to go first? Go first. You can go first today. Should I go first?
Chris
Yeah. You go for it.
Nish
Okay, so we’re gonna start with probably one of the famous holes on the 18. Yeah, I mean you’re going back, you’ve got to be back. I’ll go backwards. Okay, fair enough. Gotta go with the highlight, really. The absolute favourite hole, 18. It’s iconic, everybody knows it, everybody knows that grandstand. We got the full treatment because you could see the grandstands all that.
Chris
Yeah, I mean, that was that was pretty special, right? Playing up there. Playing that approach shop. Yeah, yeah.
Nish
You know, and we um it’s just you’ve seen it so much, and also obviously because they do the Pro Am there as well, yeah. You’ve seen celebrities that you like. You know, I’ve done last year I was watching Lando Norris playing on there, and you’ve seen Andy Murray playing and all that kind of thing, you’re like, yeah, like I’ve hit the same bit of turf and I’ve hit the same sh- not same shots, but you know, I’ve I’ve had a go and I’ve seen that view that they’ve seen. Yeah, um, that’s just incredible.
Chris
You’ve got all the feels like you however I’m gonna slightly caveat that with I think the tee shot on the 18th was a bit disappointing for me. Great, it’s a great approach, but I think the tee shot is actually probably one of the felt like one of the weakest holes from the tee. Because I got there and I was like, right, 18. And I was like, quite high-dimagined it. Yeah, um, not sure what it was, just kind of quite open, kind of.
Nish
I think where my because my tee shot ended up more to the right, there’s a bit of rough there. I mean I had a great tee shot. Fantastic. I think I think all three of you did actually. All three of you had a great tee shot. My tee shot went to the left. I got the feeling there’s something else there, usually, when by the time the tournament rolls round. Oh, maybe so I think that makes it a narrower tee shot. Yeah, I think.
Chris
Yeah, I think maybe that’s it. I think you’re right. I think there’s it must be another big grandston there. Always feels like it’s always felt like it was quite a narrow tee shot, but I actually got there and it’s just like massive feel.
Nish
Just give it a go, like give it a crack, it’s no problem. Um so yeah, I I I mean, I could be wrong, we’ll see this year, maybe we’ll watch it, but it’s just so iconic, you know. And like you play, I played my second shot, and that ended up like just short of the stream, and it was like just a little pitch, like a hundred-yard pitch up to the and it was just like, oh god, I I just want to remember this forever. Like I want to remember, and we will because we filmed it all. But um because that was actually the signature hole, Jim, not the 17th. You told us it was the 17th. So we we we were like we were we said to to our member host, didn’t we? We were like 17 is like nah. It’s 18. Do it on 18. So we did both, actually, didn’t we? Yeah, yeah, yeah. We filmed both. Yeah. Um but we did 18, and 18’s just a wonderful golf hole. Yeah, wonderful golf hole. So yeah. I don’t know if it was that one of your Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Chris
That’s a no how can it not be? Uh like you say, it’s just so iconic, and yeah, like that second shot in there. And I because I did it a good tee shot, I was like, I can go for it in two. So I kind of got a firewood in hand. I was like, I mean, this is a really, really tough shot, but I’m never gonna get to play it again, so I’m gonna have a go at it. You’ve gotta do it, haven’t you? And I topped it and yeah, made an absolute fucking mess of it. But save that for the uh for the YouTube channel. Listeners don’t need to know that.
Nish
I was like, I played mine. I was like, ah, that’s a signature A1 position, and Chris it’s a big ball anyway, so he’s he’s gonna be able to do this now. I haven’t got a shot, I haven’t got the distance to make this, I’ve got a layup, whatever. So I’m playing my like third shot. Chris is like, something I’m like, play them like what are you doing now there?
Chris
And he’s like, Oh yeah, topped some five business. But it was brilliant. At the point I hit that shot. I mean that because I was like proper, like I said, like stars, mate. I was like, this is perfect, like I can cut one in here, and this is gonna look incredible, yeah. And I hit it, and I was just topped it, and he’s waiting in the bunker like 20 hours down the fed. I was like, fuck. And then our host walked past us and was like, that was a shame, that was your time to shine, wasn’t it? Brilliant, legend, legend, right.
Nish
I’m buying him a bottle of whiskey for that. I was sending in that. Um, just as a little slight aside, uh, I was uh very lucky. I played the course that shall remain nameless. I played that um on Saturday, and the the problem, you know what you were saying about like this is my this is it, I’m gonna see it. Yeah, I had my approach on 18. I had it, it was 170 hours in, I had my seven-iron in my hand, and it was like the wind was blowing left to right, and I was like, I’m just gonna throw it up into the left edge of that green into the wind. I’ll just hope for the best, and I hit it, and you know what, you know, so you you know instinctively straight away when you hit it, like that’s the line that I’ve gone for. Yeah, yeah. And like all these things have happened in a split second in my head. I’ve gone, like, that’s the line, please don’t let it be a draw, please let it get airborne. Oh my god, it’s there, and like just seeing that ball take the exact trajectory you’ve just imagined with the backdrop of that, so which is what you would have had in your head. Like, yeah, yeah, honestly, there ain’t many better feelings in golf for that than that. It’s so it was so good, yeah. Anyway, that’s an aside. So it’s it’s a shame, actually. Forget the signature hole challenge, Chris. It’s a shame it didn’t work out because that would have been mega, wouldn’t it? It would that as a memory would be when it when it when it goes into YouTube, that’s exactly what will be happening. In instead, what you’ve got is you’re gonna generated last little baby fan.
Chris
Have it run all the time, I’ll have it running on that screen all the time. Um, right, tell us your next so I’m gonna I’m gonna go back to the other end of the course. I can’t quite figure out whether this is one of my favourite hauls because it was one of my favourite holes or just because it was the first, and again, it’s just so iconic, but I think just stood on that first T, hitting that first T shot was just absolutely brilliant. So I put the first in there, even just for that. Like, I mean it’s actually it’s actually a really easy hole. I think really short part five for us. Pros players are part four. Um I mean it’s a great haul as well, isn’t it? It’s like undulating up down, up down, TV tower at the back, TV tower at the back. Uh you know, didn’t knit it. Didn’t knit it that time, no.
Nish
Um do we remember what happened on the first hole, Chris? Do any any ideas, any clues what might have happened on the first hole? Uh just a certain certain epic golfer called Nish might have birdied it.
Chris
Oh, you did birdie it.
Nish
Birdie on the first mate, at Wentworth.
Chris
Yeah.
Nish
I was just like, what have I just done? I mean it is right.
Chris
See, like it is basically a path four, so really it was just a path.
Nish
It was like, what is happening?
Chris
How have I just done this? But it was the scorecard says differently, Christopher.
Jim
It’s so good.
Chris
Unfortunately, it won’t do whenever I get my uh permanent marker to it.
Nish
AI, get AI on it, yeah. You do stuff like that. Yeah, a golf course like that in this, I was like, This is amazing.
Chris
Yeah, I just think, yeah, for the experience of just standing on that tee and walking down that first hole, was like, how can it not be on that list?
Nish
How can it not be? Um I feel like we we played it well enough to do ourselves justice there and go, right, you know, if we never play that golf course again, please can we play it again, please?
Chris
But if we never play it again, what a memory we’ve just created for that. Absolutely. Like it just felt I think it felt like probably the most special moment that I think we’ve had so far for me on the on the top 100. I think just going down that first felt just I don’t know, it just felt like it felt like it wasn’t real, it just felt kind of imaginary, didn’t it? Um good. It was it was brilliant, it was amazing.
Nish
Um right, so that was your second top three, my my second one. Uh it was the eighth. Uh now it was a drive, really narrow landing spot it had, and then there was a a little lake just before the green. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I’ve been driving it really well, and I drove it unbelievably well that day. I I basically bisected the fairway in the most narrow part of it. Oh, yeah, it was like right in the middle. It was literally like three yards wide. You couldn’t place it any better, and it was like right in there in the middle, and then approach shot went over the water, you know, no none of this splish splash or anything like that. It was like, but it was a beautiful hole, and again, that kind of classic Wentworth vibe about it, you know, water, yeah, trees everywhere, lush green, narrow fairways, receptive green, all that kind of thing. That was a great hole. I really like that. I think that’s just before the halfway hut, as well, isn’t it? I think so it was it it was a good again, it was wasn’t not long, not a long hole.
Chris
Yeah, again, it’s one of those it’s one of those holes that you just know instinctively, don’t you? Like just seen it on the TV that oh yeah, this one. Yeah, I know this one. Tough, intimidating drive, actually, because of where it was. It’s not pretty long, is it? It’s not it’s a pretty short hole, actually, it’s only five wood or three wood, and then it’s just a little flick of a wedge on, is it? It’s not a long, it’s not a long hole, but you’ve got to get it in the right spot.
Nish
I think I think that’s the overriding thing with Wentworth, isn’t it? You if you get it in the right spot, get away from the T and get it in playing in the room.
Chris
Yeah, I think if you’re driving well, like both of us drove pretty well that day, I think it makes that course much easier. I think if you if you if you’re not getting off the Tee with a decent amount of distance and getting it in the right places, I can see why you you would you would rack a score up.
Nish
I’d probably say if you’re if you are playing there and you get there and you hit your first couple of drives and you think, oh my god, you know, big D’s not my mate today, it’s not happening. You know, take a hybrid, just I think get yourself into play. I think get yourself into play helps there, you know. We were playing off the whites, though, weren’t we? If we’re playing off the yellows, yeah, then I think you’ve got a chance. But also if you’re in play, you’re in play, like you’re not hunting around for a golf ball somewhere.
Chris
Yeah, yeah.
Nish
Um, you know, the trees were then they weren’t your your classic sorry sandbelt trees, though, were they? Because they were encroaching a bit and they were like lower down. If you were in the trees, you had to just pump it out.
Chris
The other thing to mention as well is the rough, like the rough. So that’s why Hoster basically said, I mean, this is the rough kind of cut back because the the PGA Tout here in like six or seven weeks, they’re just starting to grow it now. But when you go in that rough, fucking hell, do yourself an injury getting out of it. It’s so thick, it looks it looks fairly innocuous, doesn’t it? It doesn’t look particularly bad, but you get in there, it’s so thick and straggling, like you really gotta like give it some force to get your club through it to get the ball out. Don’t I mate? I wasn’t in the rough.
Nish
I wasn’t when I went in the roof, I went in the rough.
Chris
I mean, I always knew you were delusional, Mish, but yeah.
Nish
When I was in the rough, I was in the rough, I’ll tell you that now. Um, yeah, just yeah, wonderful, wonderful. Anyway, um you give us your last one, Chris.
Chris
Uh well I’ve actually I’ve got four again today. So only four. Jesus Christ. So to be fair, one of them I think is just because I’ve played it well, so maybe I should take that one out. Um but yeah, so the and again, a great start for me. I don’t know whether it was just because I was just on a massive high, but I put the second in there as well, the par three second, because I thought that was brilliant. It was beautiful par three.
Nish
It was a surprisingly good hole, wasn’t it? I think it took us both aback with that par three because that’s where you really noticed this is quite a hilly course, yeah, yeah.
Chris
Right, and again, it kind of gave me that sort of like Glen eagles Queens vibes to it because it was so kind of yeah, undulating and like the big kind of tree line behind it. But like I was just so giddy. But played that first and played that second, I was like, oh my god, I’ve got a picture of Chris excited.
Nish
Yeah, I know. Like, number one, he’s in the picture. Number two back to it. It was like, ha ha, this is amazing. Like, I was like, yes, mate, like we’re we’re here, we’re like we’re both like, where at when we’re we’ve just played, it’s real, it’s real, it’s not this isn’t a dream. Yeah, um, yeah, all those dark giddiness is all pouring out of that time, wasn’t it?
Chris
Yeah, pouring out. So yeah, I really yeah, I think that’s a great opening, the first two holes for me. And and even like the first four, five, six. I just it’s think it carried on for me. Like I don’t think there were many weak holes out there for me. Okay, that’s interesting to know, then isn’t it?
Nish
Um par threes in general, what did you think?
Chris
Yeah, brilliant. I mean again, there’s some iconic ones, isn’t there?
Nish
The greens were massive, weren’t they?
Chris
Yeah, all of the greens everywhere were just huge. But like really tough though, to get on there, like you’re looking at a putting, oh my god, this is gonna break like 15 feet. Yeah.
Nish
They had I mean I’m I’ve I’m putting I guess I’m putting putting well as well at the minute, and like the few last few places we played, you know, you’ve been able to trust the pace and the roll on it really, really easily. Like, obviously, obviously you’d expect that with a with a 200 million pound sub-air system or whatever it is they’ve got. Um I’ve got, and I’ve actually now, as I’ve I’ve wrote this when I went through my diplogs of holes and stuff like that, but I’ve now forgotten what it looks like, this hole. But I’ve got the 11th, I’ve got it, it’s a long sweeping um dog leg, and it’s got a dip in the middle, so again it’s like a roller coastery type thing, quite reminiscent of Sony Forest. I’ve got whether that’s true or not, I don’t know. But that’s it was so good. I can’t remember it. It was that good, that memorable, I can’t remember it. Um we’ll have a note actually about 17. So 17, we did still record it as a as signature hole. But 17’s funny because it’s it’s a really long hole, isn’t it? Really long half eyes. It curves around a little bit. A lot of them curve, don’t they? And you’ve got to like get it a shape right.
Chris
A lot of them you’ve also got the big camber can you go in the other way as well, yeah. So you do have to. 17 has that, yeah. Um you’ve got to get your right shape in, I think, otherwise you end up in trouble.
Nish
Which I did. 303 yards. This went. Now, we’re not talking baked fairways here. This was just a fucking good hit. So I was like, right, that one. And I did another 300 yard drive on on the fifth. I was like, it was just unreal what was going on. You know, we just go like excited about the day, and then actually playing good golf as well in the mix of it was just was un unbelievable. Um, so scorecards. Let’s talk about scorecards.
Chris
Oh, and
Chris
I’ve got my fourth to go through as well.
Nish
Oh, sorry, Chris, you do have a fourth, top three hole, yeah.
Chris
Top three, top my my fourth, top three. The thirteenth, the one just before the part three, fourteenth. So again, it’s just like nice, it’s a one of the few, uh the few kind of shortish power fours on there. Again, you’ve kind of got a dog leg sort of right to left, and it kind of raises rises up, and then it’s one of the smaller greens, actually. But again, I just I really like that hole. There’s just something about the elevation change, and then you kind of go up and you’ve got the fourteenth T after that, and you can kind of see it as you as you’re coming up to it. It did.
Nish
Everything went into it the next door really easy and made sense in that order. Like you wouldn’t go, oh actually, I’d have that part through it earlier. Or you know, just you wouldn’t mess with that in any way.
Chris
Yeah. And I think I I think we talked about this a bit on the day, didn’t we? And we were kind of like, why is this rank so low? Like what what are people’s problems with this? And I think I think part of it maybe, and I think we discussed this again on the day, that in some ways it’s kind of it’s not one thing or the other. Like it’s not a traditional heathland, it doesn’t feel like that, it feels different to that. You know, you’ve kind of got a lot of like these big kind of lakes and and and stuff that’s been cut out, so it’s kind of definitely feels more kind of parkland. Um so I I I think that I think that it’s more that it’s not really necessarily a uh heatling course, it’s not necessarily a parkland course, and I think that’s potentially where it loses some of it. Because I think in terms of a set of 18 holds, it’s just right up there in terms of what we played.
Nish
Yeah, I just loved it. Well we we we covered that as well in the preview, didn’t we? And it was like, you know, pose the question like does a golf course need to be a type to rank well? But clearly it does. You know, that’s golf good golf course is a good golf course, yeah, and that’s it. Like it should it should stack up, but um yeah, it was it’s it’s it’s I can’t see I can’t see where it slips. No, seven. I mean that’s no significant changes to that golf course in the last ten, maybe ten years, seven years, eight years since Ernie Els undid his changes or whatever it was he had to do. Yeah, um, madness, madness. A certain Mr. Spielberg has a house at one of those holes as well. What hole was that?
Chris
Was that like fifth? I think it was. Yeah, and we were kind of going down, and there’s like this I mean, like a proper mega mansion with these massive black gates with like SS on the on the uh on the gates.
Nish
And we were like, we were joking, we were like, yeah, we were just like telling you what the guess was because our host said like have a guess who who lives there, and we’re like, Himmler. Are we going even higher up the food chain here? Like and it was well, I mean, I guess Sylvester’s still owned, didn’t I? But yeah, yeah, yeah. He was like, No close and that’s uh Steven Spielberg. Never been there, but you know, he owns a house anyway.
Chris
Yeah, Steven Spielberg, and then Harry Kane’s just behind him.
Nish
Yeah, Harry Kane just behind him, yeah. Well we we and we’ve as we found out the course was just a mech it as a sales tool, wasn’t it, for selling the property, yeah. Which is mental. Would you live, would you live there? Fuck yeah.
Chris
What? I’m not sure I would live there. Oh shut up. I’m not sure I would. Yeah, no, no, no, you’re right, you’re right. Yeah, but I imagine that most of those houses are just empty 95% of the time.
Nish
Which is a shame.
Chris
It must be a I reckon it must be a weird vibe living around there. Like, I mean, don’t get me wrong, if someone was offering me one of those houses, I would absolutely go and live in it. But I think it would be a weird place to live.
Nish
You can you can sound click this up if you like, but weird me up, baby. I would I would take that.
Chris
I mean saying that because I know I’ll never get the opportunity to go and live.
Nish
Imagine it’s like nine o’clock at night, and like you’ve got your mates around, and you’re like, Yeah, let’s just jump on the 15th. Which hole was it?
Chris
Was it like was it the third? Go on. Where it’s like yeah, it’s like one path up the hill, and then there’s a house right just behind the green, and there’s like a gate that kind of come out onto the course, and that house is absolutely stunning, isn’t it?
Jim
It’s um it would just like oh, this is where I want to live.
Chris
Yeah, if if I if I was gonna live there, I guess it would be that house. That would be the house, wouldn’t it?
Nish
That hole was nice, wasn’t it?
Chris
We’re not mentioning that hole, but it was a beautiful those first three, four holes were yeah, insanely good.
Nish
That bang, you’re at Wentworth.
Jim
Stephen said he was gonna offer you a discount on his house, but now he’s not now he said it’s not the discount because it’s house in the century.
Nish
Yeah, that’s it. Um right, let’s get to the scores. So um, Chris, you shot a creditable 95.
Chris
Did I? Was it that bad?
Nish
I mean, yeah plus plus four. It’s a part 73. Yeah, plus four net. So you’re gonna hit the ball well, but I’ve got to be a good thing. Handicap’s been bought up, hasn’t it? It’s pretty terrible to be fair. That’s huge. Um I shot a 96, which was two under net. So Wentworth has cost me a stroke on my uh handicap. It’s uh it’s come down as a result. Um yeah, I mean I I played I’ll put it out there. I played very well that day, actually. It was 96, solid. It was solid, mate. That was uh that was a good golf course, very good golf course, and good golf play.
Jim
So um go on. Just going back to obviously you’ve talked about the your top three or top four or top eight holes. Yeah. Um would any of them go into your dream eighteen?
Chris
Is that good? Or was it I think you kind of I think playing 18 in those conditions with the stands up. I feel like that kind of has to be in there. I feel like it does.
Nish
What you’re gonna put in there then? Which from your holes would you go would go into my dream eighteen?
Chris
18. 18.
Nish
All 18. No, no, the 18th. Oh, the eighteen. That’s what I’m saying.
Chris
Playing the eighteenth with the stands up, that I felt yeah, I felt pretty special like in terms of I mean, like if you’re trying to go for that green in two, yeah.
Nish
That’s a shot.
Chris
I mean it was yeah, it was a it was a nerve-wracking second shot in there.
Nish
Yeah, I mean the streams and stuff, so you can you can go into a a stream at any point, couldn’t you, even with it if you’re laying up even. Yeah, yeah. You know. Alright, okay, interesting. Yeah.
Nish
Um maybe we’ll get to this in a minute. I don’t know. How should we do it now? Let’s do it now. Yeah, I don’t know. I I was thinking today about about it. I I was like you. But we were both like, I think this is you know, let’s do the top five discussion. It was like the top five, yes. On the day, I was like, the top three, yes. Yeah. And I was just gonna go. Maybe we’ll have to think about it. I mean, where do you sit now?
Chris
I still think it’s a little bit behind for me. Yeah, just a little bit. Okay. So I think it probably comes in number two for me. Yeah.
Nish
Yeah, I I’ve I’ve gone the opposite way. Oh right, okay. Um I have now thought about it. Okay. And I think it sits just outside. The course sits just outside my top five.
Chris
Oh really? Interesting.
Nish
Yeah, I thought how how to describe this. I thought I should have thought about this then in in an audio medium, you’ve got to describe it well, haven’t you? Um I got to the point where I was like, I was trying to revisit to find my top three. I was like, yeah, yeah, that was good. Yeah, yeah, that was good. Yeah, that was good. Yeah, but would I have it as my my and I actually just got just three as my top three holes? Because others I’ve always had more and I’ve had to trim it down and you know, whatever. So I think as a collection of 18 it works really, really well. As a golf course, obviously that you know that’s really good. Yeah. Um I’ve got I’ve got zero complaints about it, you know. But yeah, if you stuck a gun to my head and said, Is it in your time? I’d be like, no, it probably just sits just outside. Okay. So I’ll turn into one of those wanky reviewers, mate. Turned into. Yeah. Uh it’s because it’s Wentworth. I can’t cover Wentworth at my top. No, I mean I think of the courses that are in my top five, and I’m like, would I want to knock those out? Like, would I want to I’ve just played Swinney Forest again? It was magnificent again.
Chris
Yeah, yeah.
Nish
Would I knock that out? No. Would I knock Trump out? No, would I knock Dumbarnie out? No. Would I knock Hankley Common out? I don’t know. Maybe it sits alongside something like Hankley Common. I I loved Hankley Common.
Chris
I think I think comparing that to Dumbarney, I I would say that Wentworth’s like another another level.
Nish
I think what Wentworth had was the all the all the course that you the bit all the bits of the course you play in, it had the complete story. So it had like fame, it had familiarity, yeah. This is fucking cool, there’s a grand stand-up. It had all of that stuff around it that built the narrative of it being a great like listen, if you’re able to, if you’re listening to this and there’s some way you can beg, steal, or borrow and get on Wentworth, that’s the only top 100 you play, you play Wentworth. Yeah, yeah. There’s no arguments about that. Yeah. But we’re gonna be playing hopefully hundred of the top 100 courses, and yeah, would I then go? I’ve got to look at it in those terms then. Would I then but it’s been my favourite experience so far? Hands down. Yeah. Like as a day, yeah.
Chris
Like definitely number one today. Oh, I think it’s it’s almost like almost just a head and shoulders of wherever.
Nish
I just didn’t want to leave. Like it was that good. It’s like just don’t let it end, don’t let it end. Let’s go for another shower. Sort of um uh signature hole challenges. Let’s talk about those. So we’ll let’s do we’ll do the 17th first, like I said, we’ll I spank my mind on that.
Jim
600 yard par five. Something crazy, isn’t it?
Nish
Really long par five. Um I think we didn’t in neither of us with our hand or we would have done. No, we both would have got a shot. I think we both got a shot on both of these. So basically it was just who scored the lowest. Yeah. Um so I shot a six on seventeen. Chris shot. I think I was a six of the T, wasn’t it? Yeah, Chris shot. Oh, right. Chris.
Chris
I drove the ball really well all day, and then we literally got a signature hole, got the cameras out, and I fucking launched two out of bounds.
Nish
Bottled it. I could I could hear the wind escaping from his bottom. So you shot a seven. Chris shot a seven, so it wasn’t as bad as that. But uh, but I won that one anyway, and that was a fake signature challenge, and then we got to the real one. And as you heard, you know, my drive went a little bit left but had the distance. Chris absolutely A1 position, bottled it for his approach. Yeah. So that left a shootout. We’re both on the we’re on and around the green for three, weren’t we? Yeah, both on around the green.
Chris
Oh, where you’re full. So I went in the bunker and then I had to lay up and then I had to there for four.
Nish
So Chris
Nish
shot seven, I got a six. Six. So back into winning ways on a sling and channel challenge. And long may that continue. But yeah. Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. Um we’ll get into our if we need to tell you what they are, but we’ll get into our three reasons to visit Wentworth Golf Club. Uh however, is there anything else, Chris, that you would like to add about Wentworth and this unbelievable day that you would like to remember when you listen to this episode in five, ten years’ time and you go, what a day that was. What would you like to tell yourself, your future self now?
Chris
I just think the fact that I got to stand on that first tee and hit a shot off there, spend a little bit of time in that clubhouse, just what a place to be. What an absolute pleasure of a place to be. Yeah. Um, like you say, just like the service levels, just those feels that you get, I would just like another level. It did everything just it was perfect.
Nish
Yeah, well future self, I’ll just be like, just take a second, get the phone out, look at the pictures again, and just remember an unbelievable golf experience. Honestly, I’m not gonna forget it. I’m really not gonna forget stuff like that. Like it was, and it does help we do this. It this is will this will always be in existence. Yeah, it’s the reason we actually make the podcast, and it’s you listen back and you go, Wow, what a day that actually was, and you forget that you know in in with 99 other hopefully with 99 other courses, it’s like just maybe get may get lost in all that, but wow, what a day! Yeah, I say it anyway, don’t have like what a day, but that is a day that was, and yeah, if you get an invitation to Wentworth, you drop everything else, yeah, and it’s it’s work don’t listen to any reviewers, don’t listen to anybody who’s like on the core. You’re a great course isn’t great.
Chris
You’re not asking them to listen to you, but then not listen to any reviewers.
Nish
We’re we’re we’re we’re reviewers for the everyday man. I reckon that’s what we are, Chris. That’s what ChatGPT says about that part of us. There’s no actual knowledge or logic to their reviews. This is an idiot’s guide, listen to this golf courses, yeah, absolutely. But you you don’t do not read anything about like you know, oh yeah, you have a great day, but the golf course isn’t that well. No, like our level, I’d say it any level, like even you know, you play it off the tips, any level, you play that golf course. I defy you to come back and go, you’ve not had like the best day ever, and that’s what golf is about. Yeah, golf is about having the best day ever. And we did that. Yes, we did. We’ve done it in bucket loads, but um look, I will give you if I have to, yeah. Like you can pick a hundred reasons, but I’m gonna give you three reasons that you should definitively make put Wentworth as the absolute I’ll cancel my wedding to go to Wentworth kind of thing. Number one, that the sub-air system greens, my god, like they were unreal. Yeah, they were class. You have to experience that. I have never put it on anything like that. It was it’s really weird and hard to explain. But but I think the colour of them was different green as well. It’s not it’s not it wasn’t, it was like it was almost like an artificial turf green. It was not vivid, like almost dull, but like and and just you just even if you like drag you put her across the surface a little bit, a few blades of grass would flick up and you’d have to pat it all down. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Unbelievable, mate. Unbelievable. The clubhouse, number two, the clubhouse. My god, like if you could imagine a clubhouse in heaven, yeah, it’s that one, isn’t it?
Chris
Yeah, I mean it’s massive, isn’t it? I mean, it’s literally a castle.
Nish
It’s literally a castle, it’s literally a castle, looks like one and is a castle, yeah.
Chris
But it’s also it’s just really like when we get sat outside on the balcony down there, it’s it’s just beautiful.
Nish
So relaxed, yeah.
Chris
You know, took your shirt in, just do what you want.
Nish
Yeah, yeah, and you you said about um Loch Lomond. Yeah, uh, but you said about Loch Lomond.
Chris
Totally.
Nish
Hang on a minute.
Chris
You can’t slag me up about Loch Lomond anymore. You’ve been to Birkdale this weekend and play on your own.
Nish
I’ve got a pack this as an aside, Jim. I got a panicked message with Chris yesterday, and he was like, Oh, it looked like you had a really good day at Birkdale. Is Dave still gonna be able to get us?
Jim
I thought he just completely binned me off and yeah, yeah, yeah. I think I know Chris, you know, lock Norman. Well, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Nish
Sunday underfoot, yeah, yeah, yeah. That’s three times I played that on him. I just thought um, yeah. Well I know it’s this is a Wedwith review, but what a place, mate. Like set face to stun when you get there. Um that well yeah, the clubhouse just just brilliant, and the service is so good. Like again, it’s not snooty’s, no one’s looking down at you or anything like that. There’s loads of people just there, just like having their lunch, weren’t they? They weren’t like playing golf for examples, you know. Uh, and then reason number three, I think is the most obvious thing, it’s fucking Wentworth. Yeah, you just go to play Wentworth. Yeah, right. If I needed to give you that third reason, then you’re you’re in the wrong game, you know, you’re listening for no reason whatsoever. So yeah, do it. What a day, mate. We did it, we did it, baby. And like we’ve gone and done a a proper unobtainable type golf course, haven’t we?
Chris
Yes, we have.
Nish
Probably the first one. Is that the first? Yeah, first well. First one for me, yeah, yeah, yeah. We’ve now done 29 and a half golf courses. Um yeah, just uh yeah, different gravy.
Chris
Yeah, different gravy, unbelievable place. Unbelievable.
Nish
Yeah, we will we will that will live long in the memory. If anybody’s been, please um hit us up for some comments and whatever. But go on. Did you do the side bet? We did do a side bet, actually. The side bet. So Wentworth has hosted a Ryder Cup.
Jim
It’s in the 50s, was uh yeah.
Nish
Yeah, so when so we’re we’re that’s quickly ticking off these Ryder Cup menus, you know. There’s many left, is there? There’s not many left. I think of to play together. We’ve got to uh not on our list, uh obviously whatever, but but we’re playing Lindrick in the Society Day, so Lindrick I’ll I’ll tick off. But uh what else is there? There is Celtic Manor, yeah, uh Belfry, Belfry’s four. When we play Birkdale, that’s two, two gone there. Yeah. Um I think that’s probably well, I mean the Belfry and uh hogs four of them, so yeah. I don’t think there’s that many others have to start doing this. USA ones, mate. Yeah. Well I don’t usually have the poster, don’t I? So usually all on there, but so we did a uh math play. Yeah, uh guess who won?
Chris
Clearly it’s you. We’ve already had the scorecards.
Nish
Yeah, you guess what I won by you guess it.
Chris
Uh four. Four and three.
Nish
Five and four. Five and four, Chris. Yeah, these match plays are turning into.
Chris
What does coach think? Well, that’s that’s the problem, Jim is I’ve not been sea coach for quite a while. I’ve been out of work, so I’m not gonna afford the coach anymore. I might need to oh yeah, we are talking to coach.
Nish
The chat on the way down to Wentworth.
Chris
Oh yeah.
Nish
Do you want to tell Jim? This is a hilarious story.
Chris
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So basically, uh, because I’ve just not been playing for ages, not hit any golf balls, and I went to the range like the on like the Wednesday or something before we played Wentworth. I was like, shit, play Wentworth, I better go and hit some golf balls. Went to the range, literally could not hit a golf ball, like at all. Like, couldn’t hit it more than like 100 yards, it was ridiculous. Wow. Um, so I text I text my coach uh and I was like, like, I need an emergency golf lesson. I’ve forgotten, I’ve forgotten how to play golf. Can you help me? And it was like, I can’t remember. I was like, can you get me in on Saturday morning? So he’s like, No, I can’t get you on Saturday morning. So I was like, when can you get me in? It was like Friday lunch, so I’m right, right, fuck it. I’m leaving work. I’m a long lunch hour and I’m gonna go.
Nish
I’m gonna resign. Rescind my resignation an hour later, but I’ll be able to fit a golf lesson in at that time.
Chris
Um so yeah, I had to go for an emergency golf lesson before I went to Bentworth because it was otherwise it would have been a horrific day.
Jim
Did it work? Did it just work well? Sometimes you just need to calm down, then you maybe that’s the thing you can do.
Chris
Well, yeah, sometimes you just get I don’t know, you just get all out of sync, and for whatever reason, you just can’t do what you need to do. And it’s usually something simple. Emergency golf lesson, yeah, absolutely. It’s like in first world problem genuine emergency.
Nish
I’ve forgotten how to play golf. This has to come up. This has to come up. We have to bring this up. Um look, uh a couple of things I will just add for future self is you can play golf, you hit two 300 plus yard drives, and you got a birdie on the first at Wentworth. So well done, Nish. Pat on the back, etc, etc. Um, next time on the top 100 in 10 Golf podcast, we’re going to review our double header on the old and new course at Walton Heath.
