The Signature Hole Challenge

The LONGEST matchplay in the world!

Chris is 3 up thru 16 courses!

This is the LONGEST matchplay known to man!!!

But it helps us focus on something during the round, and even though Chris only decided to make this a thing AFTER we’d played 3 courses and he was already 2 UP, it’s really good and we are going to film us playing each signature hole.

Have a look at our hole by hole commentary of how we’re doing

Chris is back to 5 up after 14 signature holes

You come round the corner and the hole presents itself in all it’s glory.

And what a view this is. You are on an elevated tee, which is a hallmark of this course, and you can see a tiny sliver of fairway curving and rising up through the dunes.

It’s about as intimidating as it gets, but what a tee shot to hit!

After a topped tee shot by Nish, a good recovery and a generous CHUNK from Chris meant we were both on the green for 3, and that meant a putt off…

There’s only 1 of us winnign a putt off – Chris totally bottle his chance to tie the hole…

Nish got a net par (he had 2 shots on this one) and won on this AMAZING Signature Hole

Chris is up to 6 up after 13 signature holes

Right at the top of Gullane Hill, you hit the tee for the 3rd hole and what a view that greets you! The whole course is laid out in front of you, with the sea framing it, and Edinburgh off to the lef tin the distance.

Back to the golf, it’s an inviting drive downhil to a pretty wide fairway, and in dry conditions, there should be plenty of run leaving you perhaps a mid to long iron into a large green.

Some strategically place bunkers pose a not too serious threat. This is a hole to relax into and really let fly.

Chris got a gross BIRDIE, but didn’t do the dance unfortunately! But he did win the hole

Chris is to 5 up after 12 signature holes

What a stunning golf hole this is – the magnificent 7th at Hankley Common Golf Club

A daunting tee shot that requires a long carry and mega accuracy to hit the green, that has bunkers short left and right.

If you’re going to play for a longer tee shot, there is plenty of heather to catch you out, so on a windy day, this would be a really tricky shot.

We had a wind into our face for this so that meant careful club selectuion and you could give it a good belt… and give it a belt with we did, with a couple of cracking tee shots, that were RIGHT OVER THE FLAG! That felt so good.

That left Chris with a 17ft and Nish with a 15ft putt for birdies, neither of us got that, but we got our pars conceded to us, which meant Nish wins on the net score on this hole!

Chris back to 4 up after 15 signature holes

This is a gorgeous par 3 – with an inlet going into the vilage from the sea to the left, big towering dunes to the right and the back, and a big dip to gobble up anything short.

When you hit this hole, you know you’re at Cruden Bay. We had a gentle breeze… into a full wind, this is a tough test!

We both made a pigs ear of this hole, Chris hit a decent tee shot, but it dropped well short and rolled down the hill.

Nish hit a terrible tee shot that just made the short stuff in the dip. Then is was down to our recovery…

Chris shanked on right, Nish hit a good one, but sent it left. Onto the putt off… Chris underhit his first putt leaving a tricky one for 4, which he duly missed and lef the door open…

For Nish to drain it and claw another hole back – while this was a net challenge, Nish won on the gross score 4 shots to 5!

Chris goes 5 up after 8 signature holes

A great finishing hole, with a reachable par 5, although you’d never think it from how we played it!7

Chris topped his drive but it still went ok, Nish stuck his to the left of the fairway, but still had good distance.

Nish tried to play his way back onto the fairway that then left a little low nudge up to the green, but the ball cam up short.

After Chris duffed his 2nd, he had 2 shots to have the hole, he knocked his approach onto the MASSIVE green that awaited to take the win

Chris stays 4 up after 7 signature holes

A cracking driveable par 4 to finish this great course, becuase it’s downhill all the way from a well elevated tee.

Watch out for the small loch just in front of the tee box that’s out of sight (Nish never spotted it and drove straight in there)

Thereafter, if you’re straight, the ball will keep running, and you may just have the longest drive you’ve ever hit on your hands.

The green is large but deceptively tricky to get a 2 putt on.

Chris goes 4 up after 6 signature holes

This is a brutal par 3 with bunkers surrounding it, including the deepesrt one on the course at 12ft!

There is sand short, left and right, and the green is long and thin.

What looked like a good tee shot from Nish, after Chris had nailed his, turned put to hit the sand, and then it went quickly south after that!

Chris stays 3 up after 5 signature holes

On a tricky par 3, Chris hit the back of the green, and Nish was just wide right

From there, Chris did his usual 3 putts, and Nish chipped on then 2 putted for the half…

The rot has been stopped!

Chris goes 3 up after 4 signature holes

This hole was an unmitigated disaster for EVERYONE! No one got off the tee, no one played a good approach shot, and Chris won this hole with a 6… with Nish shooting 7 after taking 3 shots to get the ball 50 yards from the tee!!

The pressure of filming it got to all of us! Disaster, disaster, disaster!

Chris goes 2 up after 3 signature holes

The last hole where Nish had no idea this was actually going to turen into a challenge-long contest.

Chris sprayed his tee shot left but long, nish put it out of bounds to the right. He then hit the PERFECT drive after that, long and down the middle (Classic!!!)

The approach is blind so you have to pick a line, hopefully with the help of some local knowledge or just pure luck and go for it.

The green is well guarded by rough – so good luck finding your ball.

All in all, Chris shot a 6, and Nish paid the price of an errant drive with a 7

Chris goes 1 up after 2 signature holes

The 2nd hole where Nish had no idea this was an actual thing!

The flyover does this hole no justice, but it’s very easyt on the eye.

Nosh went first and topped it into the deep rough in front of the tee.

Chris stepped up and stuck it on the green, followed by Nish who hit a provisional, that for all the world looked like it was going in (again – classic golf!)

Both shots landed equidistant from the hole, which both 2 putting, but 3 off the tee cost Nish!

Hole Halved!

This is before anyone knew this was a thing – but we discreditably halved this hole in 8 (EIGHT!)

The less said about this HARD hole, the better!
